London 2012 Olympics

Supply of temporary seating to create the Olympic basketball arena

Play Video

Under the moniker of GL events UK, we designed and installed the eye-catching, 12,000-seat arena, which featured Olympic-grade tiered seating and sight-lines as well as disabled access viewing platforms. Our modular deck seating system was fixed to a steel under-structure, enclosing corridors, staircases and toilets.

This adaptable solution meant the arena could be rapidly transformed to host the Olympic handball finals and Paralympic basketball games. Seats were manufactured in-house and, thanks to the range of colours used, created an impressive, large-scale abstract interpretation of the 2012 Olympic Games’ logo.

The basketball arena was the largest temporary venue ever constructed for an Olympic or Paralympic Games and hosted basketball, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair handball and the final stages of the handball competition.

Hybrid solution

The arena comprised of a hybrid solution that mixed demountable and static seating, to provide the look and feel of a permanent arena. In addition to the grandstands, we also provided the field of play and a media centre in what was a truly turnkey solution.
