Seating & Stadia has recently completed a significant refurbishment project of Blackpool FC’s East Stand, ensuring the structure can continue to serve fans for many years to come.
The Project
Originally built as a temporary grandstand with a permanent roof by Slick Seating Systems (now known as Stadia by GL events), the stand has endured 15 years of the harsh sea air environment on the Fylde Coast. Over time, the plywood decking suffered from deterioration, leading to sections of the stand becoming unusable due to safety concerns. A replacement structure was being considered but Blackpool FC turned to Seating & Stadia for a cost-effective alternative.
Phase 1 of the refurbishment has seen a complete transformation of the existing structure. Seating & Stadia has installed 4,797 new Tangerine seats and 26 media positions complete with bespoke desks. The project included the replacement of all decking with durable aluminium, new aluminium riser units and intermediate steps, and the refurbishment of the galvanised seat frames with new seat mouldings in the club’s iconic Tangerine colour. In addition, Seating & Stadia has designed and installed a brand-new suspended TV gantry to improve broadcast capabilities on match days.
This work not only restores the stand to full use but is expected to add a further 15–20 years of life expectancy to the structure. The project was completed with the aim of providing immediate value while paving the way for future enhancements.
Stadia’s long history with the club meant that some of the team involved in the original build were also involved in the refurbishment work, bringing their knowledge of the site and the structure to the project.
Looking ahead, Seating & Stadia is working with Blackpool FC and appointed architects to deliver Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the development. Phase 2 will see the installation of toilets and food and beverage outlets in the newly created void beneath the stand Phase 3 will introduce a new public realm area, providing a dedicated fan zone for both home and away supporters, as well as upgraded outside broadcast facilities.
